Berliner Cohen Attorneys Present at SHRM California Legislative Conference

August 26, 2009

Roberta S. Hayashi and Kate Wilson, Berliner Cohen attorneys, have been selected as speakers for the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) California Legislative Conference, to be held in San Diego on October 19-20.  The conference will focus on recent employment law and legislation pertinent to the state of California.

Co-developed with the California State Council of SHRM, the conference will cover an extensive range of topics, such as recent changes in employment law, California’s Interactive Process, and leave of absence laws. In addition, attendees will receive an update on HR legislative issues making their way through the U.S. Congress, including the Employee Free Choice Act, health care and immigration reform, and other workplace issues.

Ms. Hayashi and Ms. Wilson’s session, “Legal Issues of Restructuring and Resizing Your Workforce,” will present a variety of subjects including laws relating to strategies for lay-offs, pay, salary and hour reductions, vacation usage, work sharing, severance agreements, and shutdowns.

Ms. Hayashi has over twenty-five years experience representing Silicon Valley employers in employment and business litigation.  She has trial experience in wrongful termination, discrimination, and misappropriation of trade secrets and proprietary information actions in both state and federal court.

Ms. Wilson represents companies on employment matters at administrative hearings, fact-finding conferences, and settlement conferences.  She assists clients in drafting personnel policies, employee handbooks, settlement agreements, separation and release agreements, training in workforce sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation, and conducts workplace audits.
