Business and Probate Litigation Associate

Modesto

Our Modesto office is actively recruiting for an Associate Attorney to work in our business and probate litigation practice. We will consider applicants with experience ranging from new admittees to 5 years of experience, with ties to the Modesto/Stanislaus/San Joaquin County area, and who want to live and work there. 

Candidates should possess a strong academic background, a proven track record of strong performance and measurable results, and exceptional communication, analytical, and writing skills. The ability to be a creative thinker and problem solver and to work independently and with a team is also required. Candidates must have a J.D. from an accredited law school and current good standing with the California State Bar.

The salary range for this position in our Modesto office is $107,500 to $150,000. The successful candidate's salary for this position is reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate's qualifications, and experience.

Estate Planning/Business Transactional Associate

Modesto

Land Use & Municipal Law Associate

San Jose

Berliner Cohen, LLP is seeking a mid-level associate to work out of their San Jose office as part of the firm's Municipal Law & Land Use practice group.  Our practice group represents two cities as city attorneys. We also act as special counsel for a variety of public agencies and represent private clients. The firm is a premier, medium-sized boutique law firm with offices in San Jose and the Central Valley. Candidates must be members in good standing with the State Bar of California. 

The ideal candidate will have at least 5+ years of experience with such matters as the California Environmental Quality Act, planning and zoning, public contracting, open government and ethics, affordable housing, or general municipal practice. 

The Land Use & Municipal Law Associate's salary range is $165,000 to $200,000. The successful candidate's salary for this position is reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Lateral Attorney, Employment Department

San Jose

Berliner Cohen has immediate openings in our Employment Department for a Lateral Attorney with a minimum of 5-7 years of labor law and employment litigation experience, no book of business required, but is beneficial.

The ideal applicants will be able to work independently, manage a case from beginning to end with little direction and oversight. They must have taken depositions, handled hearings, and been lead counsel on a case. In addition they will have counseled clients on all aspects of wage and hour laws, as well as, litigated wage and hour cases, class action cases, as well as employment discrimination and wrongful termination matters in California state and federal courts, responded to administrative charges, and be familiar with wage laws, leave, and compliance matters (FMLA, CFRA, ADA, FLSA and Ca Labor Codes), policy development, compliance training and managing pre-litigation disputes. The successful candidate will also possess a strong academic background, a proven track record of strong performance, and measurable results with exceptional communication, analytical, and writing skills.

This is not a remote position due to the litigation involved, but hybrid work will be considered for the right candidate.

The Lateral Attorney salary range is $165,000 to $200,000. The successful candidate's salary for this position is reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Administrative

Estate Planning Secretary

Modesto

Berliner Cohen LLP, a mid-sized law firm, has an immediate opening in our Modesto office for a highly skilled Estate Planning Secretary with at least five years of stable employment experience supporting multiple attorneys.

The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of MS Word with the ability to create and edit correspondence, briefs, pleadings, trust administration, probate documents, and preparation of estate planning documents and other legal documents. Should be proficient at e-filing and know Federal and State court rules.

Other responsibilities include maintaining attorney calendars, scheduling meetings, expense reports, check requests, and coordinating client file maintenance. Familiarity with utilizing a document management system such as NetDocs is ideal. Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are imperative.

Qualifications: Minimum of five (5) years as a secretary in a law firm supporting multiple attorneys. The ideal candidate must have extensive calendaring experience, high-level organizational skills, out-of-the-box thinking, always be one step ahead, able to solve problems proactively, and build great rapport and relationships with clients. Must be accurate, attentive to detail, and communicate effectively orally and in writing. The ideal candidate would have some knowledge of corporate/business and tax law or be interested in learning.

The successful candidate's hourly rate for this position is $25 to $34 an hour, reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate's qualifications and experience. The range listed is for someone with the required experience listed in the ad.

Human Resources Assistant

San Jose

Berliner Cohen, LLP has an immediate opening for a full-time Human Resources Assistant in our San Jose office (this position is not hybrid or remote).

Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:30 am to 5:30 pm (1-hour unpaid lunch).

Core Competencies: dependability, planning, organization, creativity, adaptability, and initiative.

Requirements:

A minimum of three to five years of Human Resources experience in a professional environment is required. Law firm experience is preferred.  

  • Must have a professional appearance and demeanor with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to be discreet, maintain strict confidentiality, and appropriately work with sensitive information and documents.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Knowledge of California employment regulations and payroll practices.
  • Familiarity with HR functions and best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Working knowledge of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), familiarity with ADP is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Team player with desire to be an active participant within the firm.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with timeliness and minimal error.

Duties & Responsibilities include:

  • Provides support to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records.
  • Assist with administrative and clerical duties.
  • Compile and update employee records (hard and soft copies) by creating files, scanning, copying, filing, and archiving.
  • Set up interviews for attorneys using Outlook, work with recruiters, and facilitate appointments.
  • Prepare new hire files and new hire paperwork.
  • Perform file audits to ensure that all required employee documentation is collected and maintained.
  • Assists the Director of HR with the firm’s safety committee and CPR certifications.
  • Assist with posting ads and checking recruiting databases.
  • Coordination of meetings, training, forms retrieval, assist with open enrollment, quarterly compliance, etc.
  • Be an integral part of several committees within the firm.

The Human Resource Assistant’s hourly pay range is expected to be between $24.00 to $28.00. The successful candidate for this position is reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Litigation Paralegal

San Jose

Berliner Cohen, LLP is seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal to work alongside a team of diverse professionals while assisting attorneys in handling all aspects of litigation. The qualified candidate will assist attorneys in managing evidence, answering interrogatories and preparing motions, complaints, briefs, and other legal documents; interviewing clients and witnesses for hearing, deposition and trial and perform all types of legal support work assigned as permitted by the rules of the California State Bar.

Candidates should possess a strong academic background, a proven track record of strong performance and measurable results, with exceptional communication, analytical, and writing skills. The ability to be a creative thinker and problem solver and to work independently and with a team is also required.

Education Requirements:  Must possess a Paralegal certificate or a degree in paralegal studies.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree and a Paralegal certificate from American Bar Association (ABA) approved program.

Experience Requirements: Minimum of five years' experience working as a paralegal in a civil litigation law firm.

Skills: Ability to work independently, see tasks through fruition, excellent attention to detail, and familiarity with electronic discovery platforms.

Merced

Berliner Cohen LLP, a mid-sized law firm in Merced, has an immediate opening for a highly skilled Litigation Secretary with at least two years of stable employment experience supporting multiple litigation attorneys.

The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of MS Word to create and edit correspondence, briefs, pleadings, TOAs, TOCs, and other legal documents. Must be proficient at e-filing and know Federal and State court rules.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining attorney calendars, scheduling meetings and depositions, expense reports, check requests, and coordinating the maintenance of client files. Familiarity with utilizing a document management system such as NetDocs is helpful. Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are imperative.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

The successful candidate's hourly rate for this position is $23 to $32 an hour, reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate's qualifications and experience.
